How to Choose the Right Type of Toilets for Your Bathroom

Today, we take the toilet for granted. However, not until the early 20th Century were many homes connected to a public sewer.

Fast forward 100 years and the toilet is just as fashionable and functional as ever.

There are many types and sizes of toilets, including the traditional close-coupled toilet or the wall-mounted WC. It's easy to become overwhelmed by all the options and industry jargon. This buyer's guide will help you choose the right toilet type.

Closed-Coupled Toilets

Closed-coupled toilets are made up of two ceramic pieces, the pan, and the container. The cistern is usually mounted on top of the pan and has a dual flush button or a handle.

Closed-coupled toilets (CCT) are the most popular type of toilet. There are many styles and shapes available, so let your individual style shine through when you choose yours.

These are the most affordable option overall in terms of both purchase and installation.

Features & Benefits:

  • It is often very affordable to buy

  • This is the quickest and most economical option for installation

  • Large selection of styles and shapes

  • The soil pipe can be inserted to go either out or in the back.

Back-to-Wall Toilets

For a minimalist and modern look, back to wall toilets work well. The cistern is hidden in the wall or in a piece of furniture. This gives the toilet a clean finish and allows for more space in the bathroom. Hidden cisterns can measure as little as 10cm in depth. This means that they are less expensive than close-coupled toilets.

If the cistern is located in bathroom furniture, an access panel allows you to view it. Or, if it's mounted in a wall, a flush plate allows you to see into it. Maintenance is generally no more complicated than that of a standard toilet.

Features & Benefits:

  • Provides a contemporary, stylish look without the need for a wall-hung toilet

  • Creates a feeling of more space in the bathroom by reducing clutter

  • A wall-mounted toilet is cheaper and easier to install because there's no support frame.

  • Designed to be used with other furniture

Wall-Mounted Toilets

The cistern is hidden behind a wall or wall-hung toilets. A chrome flush plate allows for access to the cistern.

A strong wall frame supports the toilet and houses the hidden cistern. Wall-mounted toilets can be attached to almost any wall.

When properly installed, the mounting frames can support 200kg of weight. This means that you won't have to worry about your mount falling off the wall when sitting down.

Features & Benefits:

  • Makes it easy to create the illusion of space by leaving the floors free

  • Adds style to your bathroom.

  • Can typically support around 200kg of weight

  • Space-saving

Closed-Back Toilets

Closed-back toilets, also known as fully-enclosed toilets, are a type of close-coupled toilet which goes back completely to the wall. This creates a tidy appearance. If your waste pipe is located on either side of the toilet, you will not be able to choose this type.

Features & Benefits:

  • Insures pipework that is not visible

  • Space Saving

  • It is easy to clean

Comfort Height Toilets

Comfort height toilets are four to five centimeters taller than regular toilets. This is done to make them more comfortable for users.

Although it may not seem like much, the extra height can make it easier to get up and down from the toilet for people who are taller than others, older, or more infirm. A bathroom that is designed to meet your needs can make all the difference.

Features & Benefits:

  • High sitting position

  • Lower pressure on the knees, and other lower body joints

  • Accessibility for the elderly and those with disabilities

  • The extra height makes it easier to sit down and get up.
